The small savings scheme interest rate for each post office scheme is set by the Finance Ministry every quarter, and for the October to December quarter all of them stayed the same as the quarter before. The range runs from 4.0% on the savings account to 8.2% on the Senior Citizen Savings Scheme.
Below is the full rate board, what each rate really means in rupees, and the rules that decide whether a rate stays with you or changes next quarter. This is an independent explainer, not India Post; the official notice is on the Department of Economic Affairs site.

Small savings scheme interest rate table for October to December
| Scheme | Rate a year | How interest is added |
|---|---|---|
| Savings account | 4.0% | Yearly |
| 1 year time deposit | 6.9% | Worked out quarterly, paid yearly |
| 2 year time deposit | 7.0% | Worked out quarterly, paid yearly |
| 3 year time deposit | 7.1% | Worked out quarterly, paid yearly |
| 5 year time deposit | 7.5% | Worked out quarterly, paid yearly |
| 5 year recurring deposit | 6.7% | Compounded quarterly |
| Monthly Income Scheme | 7.4% | Paid monthly |
| Senior Citizen Savings Scheme | 8.2% | Paid quarterly |
| National Savings Certificate | 7.7% | Compounded yearly, paid at maturity |
| Kisan Vikas Patra | 7.5% | Compounded yearly, doubles in 115 months |
| Public Provident Fund | 7.1% | Compounded yearly |
| Sukanya Samriddhi | 8.2% | Compounded yearly |
Every rate above is a yearly rate. How often interest is added changes what you actually earn, which is why a 7.5% deposit and a 7.5% certificate do not give exactly the same money.
What each rate means in rupees
A headline rate is easier to judge once it is turned into money. These figures use ₹1 lakh, or ₹1,000 a month for RD.
| Scheme | What ₹1 lakh gives |
|---|---|
| Savings account | ₹4,000 in a year |
| 1 year FD | ₹7,081 interest after a year |
| 5 year FD | ₹7,714 interest each year |
| MIS | About ₹617 every month |
| SCSS | ₹2,050 every quarter |
| NSC | ₹1,44,903 after 5 years |
| KVP | ₹2,00,000 after 115 months |
| RD ₹1,000 a month | About ₹71,370 after 5 years |

How the government decides the rate of interest in post office schemes
Since small savings rates were linked to the market, each scheme's rate follows the yield on government securities of a similar term, plus a small spread. The ministry reviews them every quarter and publishes an office memorandum a few days before the quarter starts.
In practice the ministry also weighs other things, such as bank deposit rates and the need to keep household savings coming in. That is why post office rates sometimes stay put even when bond yields move a little.
You can read the notice itself under small savings on the Department of Economic Affairs site. Counters change their rate boards when the new quarter opens.
Locked rate or new rate: what happens to money you already deposited
This is the question savers ask most after a rate change. The answer depends on the scheme.
| Rate stays for the full term | Rate changes with each quarter |
|---|---|
| MIS, SCSS, NSC, KVP, time deposit, RD | PPF, savings account, Sukanya Samriddhi |
So if you put money into a 5 year NSC today at 7.7%, you keep that rate even if the next quarter's rate falls. A PPF balance, on the other hand, earns whatever rate applies in each quarter of its life.
Highest interest rate in post office right now
The highest post office rate is 8.2% on SCSS, which shares the top spot with Sukanya Samriddhi. Both are restricted: SCSS needs you to be 60 or older (with a few exceptions for retirees), and Sukanya is only for a girl child.
For savers who fit neither, NSC at 7.7% is the best open rate, followed by the 5 year FD and KVP at 7.5%. The ranking changes with your goal, so see which post office scheme is best before you pick by rate alone.
How post office rates compare with bank deposits
Large banks often pay a little less than the post office on 5 year deposits, and a little more on some short terms when they run special offers. Senior citizens get an extra rate at most banks but not at the post office, except through SCSS.
The bigger difference is safety and rules. Post office deposits are owed by the government, with no cover limit. Bank deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per bank per depositor. Bank FDs are easier to break early. Our FD guide for senior citizens lays out these trade offs.
How rates moved over recent years, without the noise
Small savings rates were cut sharply a few years ago when bond yields fell, then raised in steps as yields rose. NSC, for example, sat at 6.8% for a long stretch, rose to 7.0%, then to 7.7%. KVP went from 6.9% to 7.5% over the same climb, and its doubling time shrank from 124 months to 115.
Since then the rates have stayed flat quarter after quarter. Nobody can promise the next move, so if a rate suits you today, the safe way to keep it is a fixed term scheme rather than waiting.
Where to check the rate on your own account
- Your passbook or e certificate shows the rate and maturity date.
- India Post internet banking lists every account with its rate.
- The post office counter can print a statement on request.
If the rate on your receipt does not match the board for the date you invested, ask the counter to correct it at once. Errors are rare but much easier to fix early.
Frequently asked questions
What is the post office interest rate for this quarter?
For October to December, the rates are 4.0% on savings, 6.9% to 7.5% on time deposits, 6.7% on RD, 7.4% on MIS, 8.2% on SCSS, 7.7% on NSC, 7.5% on KVP and 7.1% on PPF.
When will post office interest rates change next?
The Finance Ministry announces the next quarter's rates in the last days of the current quarter. A change, if any, applies from the first day of the new quarter.
Which post office scheme has the highest interest rate?
SCSS at 8.2%, for people aged 60 and above. Among schemes anyone can open, NSC at 7.7% is the highest.
Does a rate cut affect my old deposits?
Not for fixed term schemes. MIS, SCSS, NSC, KVP, time deposits and RD keep the rate of the day you deposited. PPF and the savings account switch to the new rate.
Is the post office savings account rate the same everywhere?
Yes. Every post office in India pays the same 4.0% on savings accounts because the rate is set centrally.
Why do websites show different post office rates?
Many pages are not updated each quarter. Match any figure with the date of the Finance Ministry notice, and confirm at the counter before you deposit.
