Enter a yearly PPF deposit to see the 15, 20 or 25 year value and the tax free interest

DepositsOpen the calculatorChecked 2 Nov for the October to December quarter

This post office PPF scheme calculator shows how a yearly Public Provident Fund deposit grows to maturity at the current 7.1% rate, and what happens if you extend to 20 or 25 years. It compounds yearly and assumes each deposit goes in before 5 April, which is how the maximum interest is earned.

The yearly table lists each year's balance and interest. The PPF rate can change each quarter, so treat long range results as estimates.

How the post office PPF scheme calculator works

Each year's deposit is added to the balance, and the whole balance earns a year's interest:

₹80,000 a year for 15 years at 7.1%: the balance after year 1 is ₹85,680; after year 15, about ₹21.7 lakh, of which ₹9.7 lakh is tax free interest.

If you deposit later in the year, or in small monthly amounts after the 5th, you earn a bit less than shown.

Extensions: the 20 and 25 year options

After 15 years you can extend in five year blocks with deposits. Keeping ₹1.5 lakh a year going for 20 years builds about ₹66 lakh; for 25 years, about ₹1.03 crore, at today's rate. The later years add most, because compounding works on a large balance. If you extend without deposits, the existing balance keeps earning, and you can withdraw once a year.

What changes the result most

Three things move a PPF result far more than small rate changes. First, deposit early in the year: the April deposit earns twelve months of interest, a March deposit almost none. Second, keep the deposits steady; a missed year cannot be made up later beyond the yearly cap. Third, extend if you can: the last five years of a 20 year PPF add more than the first ten years did, because the balance is so much larger.
