What happened to Mahila Samman

The Mahila Samman Savings Certificate paid 7.5% for two years on up to ₹2 lakh, only for women and girls. It was a limited window scheme and closed to new deposits after its last date. Certificates already bought continue to maturity at 7.5%. The full story and what to use instead are on Mahila Samman saving scheme.

Post office FD interest rate for women

Every depositor, man or woman, gets 6.9% on one year and up to 7.5% on five year TDs. Some searches suggest a special FD rate for women at the post office; there is none. A woman in her own name earns exactly what anyone else does, which is still competitive with large bank FDs.

Why saving in your own name matters

Accounts in a woman's own name give her direct control, a nominee of her choice and her own tax treatment. Interest on money gifted by a husband can be clubbed with his income for tax, but the account still belongs to her. A homemaker with little income of her own may pay no tax at all on modest interest.

A homemaker invests ₹5 lakh, her own savings, in MIS. She receives about ₹3,083 every month in her savings account, and with no other income, owes no tax on it.

Post office monthly income scheme for women

MIS is often the first scheme women ask about, because it turns savings into a steady monthly amount for household costs or personal spending. A woman can hold up to ₹9 lakh in her own single account, earning about ₹5,550 a month at 7.4%, or join a joint account of up to ₹15 lakh. There is no separate women's MIS and no extra rate, but the scheme works the same for everyone. The MIS calculator shows the monthly figure for any amount.

Best saving scheme for ladies starting small

For women starting with small sums, the RD from ₹100 a month and the PPF from ₹500 a year are the easiest. Self help group members often arrange an RD auto debit so the saving is done before the month's spending begins. Over five years, ₹500 a month in RD becomes about ₹35,683.
